RIP Hazel Rowley

9 Mar

Not being an avid obituary reader, I was stunned to learn via e mail that writer, scholar biographer Hazel Rowley had passed away unexpectedly.

I met Hazel some years back when she had written and published The Life and Times of Richard Wright. She went on to write more well-regarded biographies: Tete-a Tete: The Tumultuous Lives and Loves of Simone De Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre and most recently, Franklin and Eleanor: An Extraordinary Marriage.

The last time I saw Hazel was at a private Howard Zinn memorial at Boston’s First Arlington Street Church. I would not have thought it would be the last time I would see her.

So it goes.
