As Daniel Okrent‘s recent book Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition (Scribner)makes painstakingly clear the ill-fated and wrong headed 18th Amendment had deeper roots and wider implications (as well as a cast of colorful supporters) than conventional accounts would have us believe. By the way,Dan Okrent makes an appearance in the new documentary on prohibition.

If you like your American History,pasteurized, homogenized and sentimentalized, then by all means filmmaker Ken Burns’s take on American Prohibition, aptly called Prohibition to be aired next week on PBS in three episodes will be your cup of tea.
